Chapter: 422 (DBZ 228), P3.4-5 Context: talking about Gohan’s commute from home to school Erasa: “Eh! Did you say East 439?! You’ve got to be kidding. Isn’t that 1,000 kilometers from here!? [ ] How the heck do you get here? Even a jet flyer would take 5 hours to cover that distance!” Note: Gohan later says he can fly this distance in about 20 minutes Chapter: 424 (DBZ 230), P3.2 Context: flying to Satan City again Gohan: “This is great! Looks like I’ll be able to get there in about 20 minutes like this!” If Gohan in base can go 1 000 km in 20 minutes, or 3 000 kph, and we apply a linear increase in speed as power increases, then someone would have to be 360 000x stronger than Base Saiyaman to reach light speed (light speed being about 1 080 000 000 kph). Anyone having a gap like this in a PL list, or thinking Z characters could reach light speed? |

Instant transmission is light speed and btw no one can move in light speed in Dragon ball imo. |

Agreed, with my gaps SSj Vegetto is probably 250 000x Base Saiyaman at best, still is ridiculously large gap. Shunkan Ido [IT] should actually be faster than light speed I think, but I wasn't taking that into consideration. |

Yeah, speed is really inconsistent in DB anyway. I think I remember something on another forum proving Taopaipai throwing a pillar made him stronger than Goku Boo Saga or something. *shrugs* Edited by Nimbo-Bimbo lord of all noobs, Jun 11 2012, 12:19 AM.

speed isn't linear. the nimbus could fly at 500 mph, the same speed that arale could run. buu arc base gohan could fly at about 1,800 mph given the numbers in the quotes, but he's obviously more than 3.6x as powerful as arale. inconsistencies in speed are based on a number of factors, and most, if not all, are explainable. tao: simple, he was flying through the upper atmosphere, and used ki to accelerate once he was in the thin air where there would be little wind resistance. ssj gotenks: gotenks, of course, clocked the highest speed in all of dragonball, circling the earth 5 times in just a few minutes at most. however, the reason he was able to go so quickly is because he was outside of the atmosphere, where there was no air to slow him down. IT: instant transmission is not lightspeed. it's instant. no character in dragonball ever even got to relativistic speeds, much less lightspeed, without the use of a ship. |

I know, I was just saying even if we say speed increases in a regular pattern as power increases, Z characters still wouldn't be reaching light speeds. Speed progression is actually very slow in the DB series, as you said. |

Goku already broke 20,000 kph when he travelled back across Snake Way in 2 days after King Kai's training, didn't he? King Kai said it'd take Goku about 2 days, or 48 hours, to get back, and Snake Way is 1 million kilometres long. DBZ characters *should* have surpassed light speed during battle by the Buu Saga, imo, if not by the Frieza saga if their speed had actually increased as it should have done from Dragonball...but DBZ is absolutely terrible at staying consistent with feats of strength. |

Lol the speeds are inconsisitant Btw i think when gohan said 20 minutes he was not even going all out in base he probably.could go.several times faster if he wanted too |

DBZ is inconsistent in speed. Tao was calculated at Mach 14 in some forum I know, and Gohan isn't even Mach 10 going by quotes. I have Tao at around the 140's, and he's at Mach 14. By this calculations, I've found out that SSjin Goku (Freeza Saga) is x18 faster than light. And going by Kid Goku casually running 100 meters in 8 seconds, SSjin Goku can run 300,000,000 meters per second which is light speed casually. So they broke the light speed in the Freeza Saga. |

Physicists say that it takes an infinite amount of energy to move at, or faster than, the speed of light. As you approach light speed, your mass increases(since energy and mass are related), making approaching the speed of light more and more difficult. Since it's well established that DBZ characters don't have infinite energy, we can conclude that they can't move faster than light without teleportation. I like to think that the rate at which the characters improve their speed decreases as their power level increases. They could increase their speed by 1000x early in the series but only 100x by the end of the series, or something to that effect. |

I had this theory to prevent overpowering at the end of the series similar to that, that the stronger you get, the harder it is to make bigger gains in training, and the shorter the gap it takes to stomp the enemy. Just though it'd be a bit farfetched, but speed theory works better if you make it gains in speed. |

Physics shouldn't be used in fiction at all. Superman doesn't have infinitie energy, and he moves faster than light. Anyway, I have DBZ breaking/reaching the s.o.l in the Freeza Saga, only Goku and Freeza. Edited by supersaqer, Jun 13 2012, 12:29 PM.

no, the ogre said that legends say that snake way was 1,000,000 kph long. since the only person in living memory to actually make the crossing is yemma himself, and i doubt he had a tape measure on him at the time, that number is just an extremely exaggerated guess. the other option is that there's no air on snake way, which would drastically increase the speed of travel. also, it only took goku a little over 1 day to make the trip, so the numbers are still off whether the distance legend is true or not. |

Instant transmission was light speed. Goku tells Trunks in this when he arrives on earth in the android saga. Trunks tells him he's 2 hours away. He tells Trunks about instant transmission and says something along the lines of, "You'd be surprised how fast you can get somewhere when travelling at the speed of light". |
